PRESS RELEASE
WKRZ DJs don't just play music, they make music as well. Getting out of their radio studios and into the recording studios, 3 WKRZ DJs have been producing songs with various local talents.
Not straying too far from the music that the station already plays, the DJs themselves have been hard at work, dabbling in electronic music to further fulfil their core audience of techno and trance addicts.
Jason Chow, AVP/music director of WKRZ, is also one-third of the commercial dance and techno wizards, The Usual Suspects. Apart from steering the creative direction of the band, the man has provided the vocals on tracks like "Come on over", 'Is it too late" and "Black Man Ray", all of which appear on their debut album.
KS Lee, Creative Producer/Presenter at WKRZ has also recently teamed up The Usual Suspects to record a trance/dance update of "Pure" which was originally a hit for Lightning Seeds circa 1990. The response for these tracks has been immensely encouraging and some of the songs have already been licensed to several best-selling dance compilations.
Let's not also forget about Suzanne Walker, your evening drive-time host on WKRZ. She has recently joined forces X'Ho and Yeow to be part of the Zircon Government Pawnstars. An album entitled "Follywood" is due out soon with lots of electro titbits for fans of that genre to nibble on.

Jason Chow on his involvement with the Usual Suspects :
The Usual Suspects project was born out of our love for dance music. Many people regard dance as mindless beats and banging rhythms deserving its place only in clubs and parties.There are many aspiring local dance producers and Djs but none have made a concerted effort to make dance music more accessible to a mass audience. With our project, we hope to introduce and present dance music as an accepted genre and part of local culture.

KS Lee on "Pure" :
I was having a drink with Leonard T (from the Usual Suspects) one day and we discovered how much we both loved the original by the Lightning Seeds. After one drink too many, both of us started humming the song to a "doomsh-doomsh" dance beat and before you know it, I was whisked into the studio to record a new version of that song. The original was pure joyous pop. I just hope I didn't taint it too much.

Suzanne on her involvement with Zircon Government Pawn Starz :
It came at a time when I wasn't ready to do anything else. X'ho whom I'd know from 10 years back, my early days in radio, invited me to lay the vocals after a chance recording with Jason Tan (producer). Being with the guys, working on the songs and hanging in the studio was the safest place for me. I never thought anything major would come out of it. It was simply a project with people whom I respect and trust totally.

Zircon Gov Pawn Starz are Singapore's premier art-punk/electro-enfant-terrorists.

They are called Sue Sue Law, X'Ho and Yeow. These may be common names in Singapore, so ignore any inferred glamour.Their album has Chicks on Speed and peter christopherson on it. You can dance to them.

They look a bit like Sigue Sigue Sputnik, but good. This all might not have worked. They kind of pull it off.

Uk born Bee Futon spent most of his teenage years in London. He worked with several bands in the UK including the Charles Manson infatuated ‘Getting The Fear’ and Psychic TV. He then moved to New York and worked in the Limelight at ‘Party Monster’ Michael Alig’s Disco 2,000. His next stop was Bangkok, which he rocked for 7 years with his own Radio show. More recently he formed REHAB which was one of Bangkok Ministry of Sound's most talked about nights and is now a monthly night at Bed SupperClub.

He is also a member of the electro outfit Futon, who are now being played in clubs worldwide -from London’s Nag Nag Nag to Tokyo’s Vanity.

A pattern that leads to inevitable hikes ...

The masses are resigned to this 'natural order of things'

THE same symphonic pattern emerges.

First, the prelude, with the local media heralding a slew of statistics announcing the arrival of better economic times.

Then, a premature suggestion to restore the ministers' and top civil servants' pay cuts, which was greeted with unpopular feedback by many who felt that the economic upturn benefits have yet to filter down the masses.

The main theme comes into play with miscellaneous school fees and town councils' service and conservancy charges going up.

This will inevitably lead to more government and quasi-government bodies following suit.

The crescendo builds up as everybody scrambles to raise charges, taking the cue and green light from the early birds who first up their fees.

The finale ends in an anti-climax as the masses resign themselves to their fate — the swallows have arrived, spring has come, the flowers are blooming and so prices must go up.

We are led to believe that this is the natural order of things.

Oddly enough, when times were really bad and many retrenched, things took much longer to come down and the cuts were, if any, merely token symbolic ones.

What is worse is every price increase is met with the rhetorical reassurance that nobody would be deprived of basic services despite the hikes and the social net is always there for those who really cannot afford the increment.

The other tired argument to justify the hikes is that the charges have not been increased for so many years and therefore the increase is way overdue.

This is cold comfort as most Singaporeans would rather tighten their belts than go through the hassle of applying for poor men's benefits from the government.

So what is next? University and polytechnic fees, transport hikes, hospital bills, parking charges, stamps ...

Here’s an interesting one from the local pool of talent. Honestly, it’s not too bloody bad. This is the latest incarnation of Zircon Lounge, Singapore’s first-ever new wave band. It’s uncertain how much of the irony of new wave they get — their slogan, “the greatest band you don’t know you need,” does suggest some self-regard — but if anyone in Singapore’s ever going to get it, these guys will. The music is ‘80s electro. Never mind, though: ultimately the question is, is it danceable? And the answer is yes, in that electro way.

What a vast difference a week makes.

The press release from the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on the 22 June 2004 was swelling with positive optimism (see footnote 1) that the Ministry was easing towards a peaceful and acceptable resolution to the salary claims of 440 foreign workers owed in arrears by their employer, Wan Soon Construction Private Limited.

But what an immense difference a week makes.

Something apparently went abominably wrong in the course of 7 days which ultimately precipitated a mobilisation of over 200 discontented workers at the Indian embassy, inducing a nameless trepidation within the ranks of MOM. Suddenly, with one swift stroke, the layers of deception so meticulously erected were unceremoniously disrobed in "pompous" fashion.

Abruptly, the public learned that an important omission was perpetrated by MOM in the press release for reasons that are too sinister to ever be declassified. Nevertheless, the deceit distastefully manifested when it transpired that the 118 workers were dispatched home, unwillingly "persuaded" to accept a sordid compromise, practically under the "menace" of being potentially charged as unlawful "overstayed" immigrants (see footnote 2).

To further bemire the matter, MOM unscrupulously weaved a fable, projecting a façade of kindness in offering to render assistance to the "request" of the workers to be relocated to other employers (see footnote 3). Embarrassingly for MOM, the resolve of the workers elevated the truth to the foreground (see footnote 4), shattering the mask of falsehood in an emphatic manner.

The beautiful lie was completed when it transpired upon the public that MOM, in earnest, did not have the means or the will or the competency to settle the problem. In desperation, MOM hid behind the protective time-tested technique of "bureaucratic procedure" excellently honed by the civil service of Singapore. The workers were far too sage to fall for the amateurish smokescreen (see footnote 5).

MOM had effortlessly exacerbated the international opinion of Singapore as a "revolting republic" where justice is not dispensed without the procedure of grand mobilisation and visible pressures generated from media publicity. This reality will forever be etched into the minds of thousands of low-skilled foreign labourers, investors, and travellers.

Volumes of agreements on trade and bi-lateral cooperation would not suffice to erase the stigma.

Singaporeans can only pray that this eroding faith of the foreign workers, and the world, in Singapore may not one day become retributive towards our fellow overseas nationals. After all, there is wisdom in the old adage "Do not do onto others what you do not want others to do onto you".

In the hurly burly, Singaporeans serendipitously witnessed a part of them which had long been consigned to the dustbin of history of humanitarianism in Singapore. It was a collective spirit of solidarity and brotherhood, and a culture of pro-activeness honed from a more permissive and comparatively liberal democratic institution. It was a spirit which can only exist in a society where men believe that the power of the people can surmount the resistance of the government they elected.

The institution had long been erased from the psyche of this once dynamic nation ever since the days when repressive laws were enacted to suppress "independent thoughts". And it was this righteous institution which tore gaping holes in the tapestries of lies painted by MOM.

These poor foreign labourers had taught Singaporeans a valuable lesson in democratic freedom.

According to the Yahoo! Singapore Poll, Singaporeans demonstrated a strong preference for Glenn Ong to join the judging panel in the upcoming Singapore Idol. Some 30% of respondents choose him as a good option for the talent programme. But the radio shock jock didn't make it to the roster! Comedian actor Kumar and singer Kit Chan were also strongly favoured. This was Yahoo! Singapore's most popular poll to date with over 15,000 respondents in just seven days. Perhaps there is time to reconsider?

High fashion was the order of the day as -- arguably the best two bands from Singapore right now -- Tiramisu and Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz's appetite for flamboyance ruled the gig with low fashion. Like models, both bands strutted out on stage dressed up from sublime kitsch to lo-fi chic. The colors were a dizzy garish and became irresistibly sexy when married to the charged up music both bands discharged. This was refined irony at its best.

Tiramisu opened the show with their raunchy rock n roll that swaggered like Ziggy Stardust, have the sneer that punk rock lost and have more fun than Andy Bell (Erasure) in leotards. The band was led out all in full splendor by their dancer, performance artist/actor Dovan Ong who twinkle-toed around in a pink costume with butterfly wings. Bassist Noor Azlan was in a Shazam superhero outfit, guitarist Jeremy Sharma in Karate Kid red and guitarist Keith Su was styled as a modern Mongolian warrior in Afro wig. Keyboardist/sampler Isrudy was a techno cowboy in matching cyan and yellow and charismatic singer Rizman Putra was togged up in tight shorts and a ladies top.

Rizman with one hand wrapped in black ladies’ glove, wide eyed and in mock delirium had a method to his madness. Possessed by his Manic Jango alter ego, his pulsating energy fuelled the band’s sonic assault. Tiramisu’s hour set became a frenzy of maniacal energy opening with the towering “Do A Little Dance” and ending with the euphonic “Shelter Me Jamie.” “Take Over The World” and “Dewa” -- hit songs Singapore radio stations never knew about -- were as always greeted by gasps from fans. They kept two surprises towards the end, covering Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart Again” and the Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?”

While Tiramisu wore their tawdry outfits with class, ZGPS wasn’t about to be outdone. Singer/lyricist X’Ho in white homemade graffiti garb wore tangerine niteglo lipsticks. Singer/sex-bomb Sue Sue Law catwalked on in neck high cheongsum, which surprised the crowd expecting her to come dressed in something a lot more titillating. By the middle of their set as ZGPS’s dirty electro-clash got hotter, naughty Sue Sue relented and disrobed down to her lingerie. The last of the trio guitarist/instrumentalist Yeow opted for the simple ubiquitous bandana and padlock neckchain accessory.

ZGPS isn’t just all show and fashion. X’ Ho’s lyrics are angry and together with Sue Sue, they half-rapped and half-sang their messages across like a hellbent punk band. Opening with “Starf**ker” through to the catchy “Media Whore,” their music was thick on low frequency modulation and high on sleazy disco brine. A delicious heady mix followed on the call and respond “Freaks”, their cover of Futon’s big beat anthem, “F**k Machine,” and the superb “Nag Nag Nag.” By the middle of the set, Sue Sue and X’Ho took time out to wish Yeow a happy birthday. Sweet.

A guitar-only opening of Iggy Pop’s classic “I Wanna Be Your Dog” ascended into a drilling industrial dance piece with X’Ho singing in Thai. The fun never ends as the band pay tribute to the The Singapore Make Babies Campaign with another call and respond number “Just F**k,” urging the crowd to “Don’t smoke cigarette/ Don’t take any drugs/ Don’t go out at night/ Just F**k.” It was back to the loudhailer as X’Ho brought the night to a close with “Nightmare (On 8 & 5).”

I used to be into Double Rabbit 100% cotton underwear in pure white for $1.90, but when Metro stopped carrying them I started buying all my stuff in France. Michael or Janet Jackson? It's a close tie only because I like both their plastic surgeons. When was the last time you tasted the milk of human kindness? When Tracy Phillips from Zouk gave me a pitcher of vodka lime after my gig at Zouk and her bouncer, the sweetie, stashed my suitcase somewhere so I could party till 4am. Are you naughty or nice? Don't you get it yet? I'm bloody shameless. I will be or do anything, as long as I can get a picture taken that'll make the headlines!

was thinking if there is an 'honest mistake' with your sticker label on the cover when it says there are 12 tracks in Follywood but the listing on the back cover has only 11 tracks. really surprised to hear a 'hidden track' after track 11 when I played the CD. mind telling what is the title for this 'hidden track'? love it love it love it...

Thank you all who came, worked, set-up & organised. We had a great time and, despite the mediocre turnout, feel it was a blast. The audience was grrrreat. The Esplanade, I have to say, with its hi-tech professional expertise, is a superb venue to perform at (compared to what one normally settles for). Someday, all venues in Singapore should operate that way. Such is life - I bitch about the 'durian' and it turns out to be such an incredible performance-venue. The secret is - you could so easily get lost in its maze of inticate architectural design...unless you work in it. Ahh..!

Singaporean Punk Rock Group Releases Rebellious Debut Album

Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz, the threesome formerly known as Zircon Lounge, recently released their debut album Follywood. Reviews have interpreted the album’s explicit lyrics and risqué content as an attempt to rebel againstSingapore’s restrictive government and loosen up the conservative population.

The album is a combination of punk-rock music and anti-establishment sentiments. In songs like "Media Whore" the group attacks pop-stars in Singapore as people that cater to the mainstream without having a mind of their own.

This is a gutsy album that parodies the Singaporean national crest on the front cover and flaunts the phrase, “Nu-school f*cker, Singapore f*cker!”

ZIRCON GOV. PAWN STARZ - consists of X'Ho, Suzanne Walker and Yeow. I caught them last April 24, 2004 at Zouk.

As i've mentioned earlier, Suzanne was more of screaming her lungs out and she did look horrible in that bikini and greenish hola strings on her hip. But still, i adored because i knew her as elegant, sweet DJ and seeing her live like that made me smiled widely. She sounded better on the CD itself.

I could have punch myself to coma because, why in the world didn't i snap X'ho's picture? What is the use of my Nokia 6600? Probably i was too lazy to be down there. Plus the crowd ain't moving.

The music is my genre of music. The front cover of the album has Singapore's logo. It is a anti-gov kinda of crap, which i like. i give 4 thumbs to it!

Yeah yeah, i like weird people. Like Najib Ali, X'ho, Glenn Ong, Shirley Manson and Suzanne Walker. I find that they are the most 'best' people to admire, adore, role-model and oogle at. Why? Yes, they may pretend, but most of the time, their stuffs are REAL, not FAKE.

Thinking again, i am weird in many ways. I'm just lucky to find someone who is patient and can handle my weirdness in most of the cases. Love you baby.

ps- the writer of this blog has gone to KL for the weekend. Happy May Day (Labour Day). She will be back exactly a week from now. Like last week. *dance*

It's one of those moments that make you feel a bit old. For some reason, the stupid and thoroughly fun Midwestern music of my youth (Wax Trax bands such as Ministry, the Revolting Cocks, and the Thrill Kill Kult) has hit Singapore. Sort of.

Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz is a threesome of self-confessed "media whores" who make bad music and good t-shirts. They also have tried to adopt a vaguely radical, anti-government position. In an ironic, post-political sort of way. Their new album, Follywood, was released in April.

BigO's Review Of Follywood

Follywood [XY/Universal]

It makes me sick to read reviews that try to be clever about describing the music on this album, and then go on to say that: "Follywood... should be seen as an invaluable entry to the nation's ongoing efforts to loosen up."

And the reviews say so little about what Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz is saying. Something is obviously wrong here because no album in the last decade has made such a clear effort to define Singapore. This is the most fucking punk rock album we have ever had even if it's electro-clash that the songs are couched in.

Mouthless Fish, the opening track, are us, the ones who can "barely breathe", who are gripped, squeezed and arm-locked but without a voice. Drop the Attitude, Fucker is an attack on stardom in Singapore, that it's a shallow joke because you're nothing more than an establishment celebrity. The attitude is fake because you can't be a star outside the mainstream. As X'Ho notes: "There's nothing better than being a Durian star/Just remember, be proud of the Durian/They might even give you a public service award."

Media Whore parodies the mainstream media: "Just look pretty/Stay mum/But most of all, obedient." Nightmare on 8 & 5 continues the band's gaze at the media, this time, it's the brain jelly they serve up on TV: "Little soaps to set you free/You turn the knobs, they turn the tide." Digit Nation is a litany of happy government P.R.: "Hip & funky/No corruption/Wonderful free speech.../Speakers' Corner/Electro-gantries."

The problem of separating content from the image has never left us. Which is why in an odd way, we will look at this album as a fashion statement. We will ignore it for its glam, for its famous guests from Chicks on Speed, Coil to Futon. We will discuss the merit of the music and the remixes by Case, Kiat and Ashidiq and Jason Tan's production.

Like so many other things, we will choose to see the fun but not the anger. X'ho's work has always been a combination of both and what you choose to see reflects yourself and what you care or don't care about. For the album to feature a parody of the national crest, for its insistence on believing in an opposition (the establishment line is that there's no credible opposition), if you think Follywood is all fun, then you're living in it.

Zircon Gov Pawn Starz are the first nu-electro group in Singapore. Just weeks after their album launch at the hip club Zouk, they’re raising more eyebrows than a stripper in a supermarket. The threesome – X’Ho, Yeow and Sue Sue Law – are notable because of Singa-pop’s great divide between the squeaky-clean mainstream and the guitar-banging alternative. Zircon pursues its own unique path. Celebrating the joy and sleaze of funky robo-punk, Zircon’s music also swims against the current wave of electronica/house heard in today’s popular dance music.

I caught up with singer/lyricist X’Ho and gave him the third degree:

How was Zircon born?
Well, a long time ago, in the ‘80s, there was a band here in Singapore called Zircon Lounge. Yeow and I were members. Yeow approached me one day to reform Zircon (which used to be a guitar band) I said fine, but I want our new music to be electro so I can make statements. We then got ourselves a sexy front woman, Sue Sue Law, to give my sordid statements an alluring gloss.”

Can you explain the name?
Zircon Gov Pawn Starz really is a statement in itself tagged to the Zircon identity of fakery. Pawn Starz are prefab stars and Gov is the Internet way of stating government, which has a scary effect in Singapore. Because here, people think the word is exclusive to Singapore. Of course, phonetically, the name has a naughty ring because people think its ‘porn stars’.”

At the MTV Awards, Sue Sue Law struck slutty poses for the press on the red carpet. The next day, she was splattered all over the front pages of the press and compared with Janet Jackson. Was it a stunt?

Sue-Sue is a sweet angel mistaken for something else because of the way she looks – kinda like me, as well. I think her stunt was a Godsend and God-nudged. It even surprised me because she thought it up just moments before we walked down the red carpet. It was a great stunt because it’s a statement about pawn stars and crappy cool celebrities at those kind of awards shows.

Why is your debut album called Follywood?
It’s a statement about a prefab Hollywood. If you think there’s no such thing as a prefab Hollywood, only prefab stars, think again. Or better still, come and live in “Uniquely” Singapore. The term Follywood is also found in the lyrics of our first single.

What brands do you wear? Despise?
Gee, I have to be honest and say that I wear a lot of Adidas. Oh, and I recently rediscovered the joy of wearing Levi’s. Despise? Prada – only because of the yuppie fashion-victim association. Oh, and Reebok, because it launched itself years ago in Singapore with the Great Singapore Workout campaign. How lacking in taste is that?!

What’s planned for Zircon?
There has been talk about us supporting this well-known German punk singer Mia in Germany. And oddly, we’ve been asked to play at The Esplanade – a big arts-venue – in Singapore in late May. We’ve agreed, but only because there’s some money in it. We’ll do anything for money when it’s about adding to Singapore’s esteem.

Give us some alternatives to Singapore’s tourist traps?
Well, since I’m into seedy subculture, for sure, Geylang – the seedy red-light district – is the only all-night place for action in Singapore. There are lots of foreign workers there, lots of low-income types. To me, they’re the “beautiful people”. And because it’s Singapore, it’s seedy but still safe! How ironic!”

Hey Yeow, You're right, the Esplanade area for Zircon on May 29 is phenomenal. It's not what alot of people will think. It's more like a giant rave warehouse. That means PAARRRRTY !!!! (with no ecstasy, lah; but got alcohol leh. Far-out). By the way, met a guy at Bar None tonight who said he's your ex-platoon mate. He later bought me a drink that was brought to me just when Objection Overrule (omigod, they rock!) started playing. Had no chance to thank him cos after the gig, I couldn't find him to say thanks. Think his name is Jeremy. Tell him thanks for me, will ya?!
Frankly, only tonight, did I manage to shake off the post-concert blues. It felt like post-natal blues (not that I really know what that feels like). You could say I've gotten the performing-itch. Just back from the Esplanade. Damn awesome backstage man! Really, it will be a night to remember. We are going to have a huge reverse projection screen. Will talk to X'ho about the set. Got to make it intimate yet rocking. My brain is working.

Went to two gigs yesterday. Dharma's punk rock one then the Zircon Gov Pawn Starz one at Zouk. The former was hot and sweat affair, we were baking under the aluminium insulation sheet that lined the roof. Very MTV, ironically i couldn't help thinking Britney - I'm a Slave 4U instead of Blink-(some numerical behind this can't remember as am not really a fan of 90s punk). Anyhow it was getting incredibly hot so we headed down to the chill out room - airconditioned - on the 3rd floor which had a mirror. Of course being the narcissists we are, we spent the better part of the time posing in the mirror and taking digital pictures of our fabulous selves. There was this fantastic little black metal guitar rack and shiai and aaron climbed all over it like whores on heat posing, gritting their teeth like wild animals as i directed and simin shot. Some of the pictures turned out very good. Schmolder! Schmolder! What the hell is that? Stop smiling! Dirty thoughts! Dirty! Gggrrr! It felt so America's Next Top Model. I like.

For the second gig. Outside Zouk they had set up this psuedo red carpet thing and as you walk into the place you're supposed to pose like a "superstar" or whatever - i don't know. A strut contest. To cut a long story short i won. I get a trip for 2 to bangkok, a $100 HMV voucher and of course a Zircon Gov Pawn Starz hamper. I went backstage to meet the band - X'ho is a pretty nice guy - after we danced onstage(me to one song only)as cameras clicked away. At best it was surreal. And weird enough i felt a bit blase when i was on stage - like whatever. I'm on about the HMV voucher though, gonna get me a whole lotta Joni Mitchells i think. Oh, almost forget. How did i win? I sashayed up to the judges and did a parody of the sue-sue law asia mtv thing, by pulling up my shirt and cupping my bra while "so sue me" scrawled on my rock hard abs in black eyeliner -done by aaron - flashed/eyeball spanked them. Naturally they were blown away. Anyone would be. Never knew this method was so effective. Consider making this my new pick up schtick.

The Five-Steps Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich

Step 1: Take three slices of white bread (we don't need no oaty wholewheat shit) and pound them hardly on the table/floor/whereever you feel comfortable making your sandwich.

Step 2: Eat off all the brown sides of the bread. (can I use a knife?) No, this is a stressful task - you might risk stabbing yourself in your ass.

Step 3: Spread peanut butter one side of the two slices (leave the other one alone) with your forefinger before licking them clean. (Why?) No food wastage here, mate.

Step 4: Now, grab the jelly and play with it by bouncing off from one palm to the other before smacking them flat on the remaining slice of bread - both sides, thank you.

Step 5: Combine all slices together and voila, you have Sillypore's Best Peanut Butter Sandwich.

X'Ho, 'forever 27', ever vocal on Singapore society and culture, has even compiled his columns into two books.

The ex-Rediffusion DJ is also credited with introducing alternative and New Wave music to local music diets.

'I never set out to be a careerist - I was primarily a music fan and I'd simply wanted to expose Singaporeans to what I thought was good music,' he said.

'Ultimately, I'm very old school. As a deejay, I believe that if you've nothing to say, shut up.'

X'Ho has just formed a new band - Zircon Gov. Pawnstarz - with guitarist Tan Tiang Yeow and ex-deejay Suzanne Walker.

Asked how he'd react if he had to introduce a Pawnstarz hit on air, he squealed: 'Ooo, I'd be so shy! No lah, I couldn't play my own song! Maybe in the clubs but not radio!'

Claim to fame: X'Ho introduced ground-breaking music to local listeners. He has released three solo albums and written two books.

Catch him: X'Ho spins at the Soundbar on Fridays from 9pm.

Pawnstarz is putting the finishing touches on its debut album, Follywood, and hopes to open for Blondie when and if the '80s band makes it to Singapore (the band cancelled its December gig).

THE morning after she hijacked the headlines by lifting her T-shirt halfway up her chest at the MTV Asia Awards red carpet, Suzanne Walker was still basking in the publicity.

To the suggestion that she might have offended some folks with her stunt, the 34-year-old DJ said on the phone: 'It's MTV. It's not a charity gala.'

She just wanted to take the mickey out of the show, she added.

'But you guys took it seriously,' she said in her husky voice, and laughed.

Walker, who is a singer in DJ X'Ho's new electro band, Zircon Gov. Pawnstarz, proceeded to do a promotional pitch for the group: 'Our video is released next week. Our album is launched next month. So, thank you very much.'

She and the band's leader, Ho, had hatched a plan to do something outrageous on the red carpet when they were walking from the carpark, she said.

Either he would flash the crowd or she would flaunt the lower halves of her orbs.

Alas, he had no wish to be arrested. So, she had to go it alone.

When contacted, Ho, who is 'forever 27', said he had warned Walker that 'this is Singapore, honey. You can only show so much'.

Even if the stunt was in bad taste, he said, it was in 'good bad taste'.

Cameramen from about 100 media organisations were glad to capture Walker's mock-pornstar act. Some of the 400 fans screamed when they saw her. Others looked indifferent.

Photographers from overseas news services such as AFP and Associated Press did not know who she was.

Instead, they thought she was a 'stunt performer' sending up singer Janet Jackson's breast-baring incident.

But Walker insisted 'it wasn't a Janet Jackson'.

Although she was wearing 'a see-through Princess Tam Tam bra', she covered her nipples with her hands throughout, she said.

last night was Zironc Govt Pawn Starz' album launch at Zouk. Follywood. I had such a great time! the music wasnt as loud as it should be, as usual, Zouk's bringing the the volume in da house. Wot's goin on man, patrons gettin old?

Anyways, Suzanna Walker aka Sue Sue Law, alone made the trip down to Zouk worthwhile. She's so trashy and funny, droopy and plumpish, and she doesnt fucken care! I LIKE!!!! I like alot alot! She came on wearing sorta like a suede peacoat and short-feather-lace-type-almost-a-skirt thang and then she threw off her coat to reveal a lacey bra top thingy that threatened the crowd with a peek of her breasts and it DID! a few times her nipples popped out and she popped them right back in, flashing a brilliant grin into the crowd, wagging her finger, kinda like going, "oh no you dont." She turned around once and behind her almost-skirt was a huge gap and her gaping ass, buck naked. ahhaha she rocks.

then towards the end of the amazing show, someone threw a pair of briefs and it accurately hit Sue Sue Law on her head. She picked it up and wore it then stuck her fist into the crotch. ahhaha cracked me up. She doesn't as much sing as she does yell her words.

Chris Ho, oops! i meant Xho (those who've been reading my 'writings' for a couple of yrs now, yes all two of you, no mom, yr not included, know how much i hate it when Chris is substituted wif X, kinda like X'mas, but for X Ho, it's ok) wore a torn tee and a girdle. And wiggled his ass alot.

Music wise, it was Yeow apparently who programmed all the songs and wrote all the music i think. I think that the cheese factor in the beats is still B-grade, compared to acts like Ladytron and Chicks on Speed, even tho' they've got some good tunes there. Nonetheless, "lo-ker music, must support". But everyone noted that he seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. He's "not wif it". haha, bless the poor soul, he tries.

Now Singapore, you want yr own stars, you got yr starz. go eat them up.

Pawn Starz rocked the house last night at zouk. a house of corpses, might i add as everyone stood static like a gaping mannequin audience as x-ho and gang was rocking all away on stage, as suzanne walker left one question on the minds of most of the males- "wardobe malfunction, please?". Whoever said the Dead Can Dance. There's this magic concotion that i shall introduce to you. Purple Haze. (all in my brain) its fucking tops, tho a tad neutered. try it, its a drink everyone would love. for the whole family, no shitting you.

BACK in February, radio DJ-turned-pop dominatrix Suzanne Walker hijacked the MTV Asia Awards with a chest-baring stunt so hilariously sluttish (and yet coyly not baring any nipples), it added real anarchy to a parade of toothy, 'I love-Singapore' popsters.

Walker - also known as Sue-Sue Law in her rock-star persona - has ganged up with Singapore's very own punk-monk X'Ho and his former Zircon Lounge partner-in-crime Yeow to form a nu electro trio that takes the mickey out of everything, not least themselves.

Which is why Follywood - a glorious spoof of the land of dreams as transposed to Singapore, the 'ultimate land of prefab sprouts' - should be seen as an invaluable entry to the nation's ongoing efforts to loosen up.

As a matter of course, the establishment should view Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz with utmost derision. After all, that is the band's raison d'etre - to push all the buttons of the prude and prissy and get their heartbeats to race a little.

In all departments - from sound to imagery - the Pawn Starz ride the line between glamorous porn-star sleaze and good humour with superb sass. With guest spots by Munich electronic gurus Chicks On Speed, German diva Mia and Thailand's electro-rockers Futon, these guys are cosmopolitan crusaders on a rampage.

X'Ho is in his element mouthing acerbic witticisms in original songs like the pumped-up, motorised diatribe called Mouthless Fish, parlaying his sultry radio-DJ croon to devastating effect: 'They'll arm-lock you but you won't choke.'

So straight is his delivery, it bleeds heart-wrenching empathy.

Such is the subversive appeal of the Pawn Starz: They regularly ping-pong between pain and joy, between pity and irrationality in their decidedly catchy synth-pop anthems against inertia.

Take a listen to the raucous version of New Hampshire pop-punk band The Queers' Drop The Attitude, F***er with added references to reality shows and Channel 8.

Even more salacious is the acidic Nag Nag Nag, where Ms Sue-Sue Law struts as a hardcore school mistress, sounding like, surprise, Suzanne Vega gone to seed.

In short, the Pawn Starz are the mogwai of Singapore pop-culture, wreaking havoc and leaving you not a little breathless.

Don't judge by its cover

ONE look at the cover of Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz's debut album, Follywood (picture), may leave you wowed by its audacity.
.There's an adaptation of the Singapore crest, featuring two scantily-clad women (who look uncannily like Sue-Sue Law), with a banana in the middle.
.The cover artwork hits you in the face — the band's controversy-seeking name does the same — so much so that you are bound to miss the glaring typographical error.
.And the error is not in the album's title, which is an obvious pun on Hollywood.

Yesterday.
Just one of those nights that I've been looking forward to but I end up feeling disappointed (or plain f-up).

Highlight of the Day: Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz.
Woah. Electrifying! Chris Ho dressed up so "wrong" but yet, sexy. Sue-Sue Law (Suzanne Walker) stripped to her sequinned bra and hula skirt look-alike which showed bits of her bum. Yeow was cool. My favourite Zircon track was their opening performance! Woohoo! I had a good time watching Zircon.

And, it was downhill from there.

Zircon Gov Pawn Starz bring on the mix from the Lion City

Singapore’s nu-electro band Zircon Gov Pawn Starz has released its long-awaited debut album.
“Follywood” contains a handful of originals with some intriguing titles, including “Media Whore” and “Mouthless Fish”. There are several guest artists, as well. “Nag Nag Nag” (not the Cabaret Voltaire classic) features Peter Christopherson (ex-Throbbing Gristle) of Coil, “Digit Nation” features Mia, and the band’s signature theme-song, “Zircon Gov Pawn Starz”, features Chicks On Speed.
Included are a couple of re-worked covers; The Queers’ “Drop the Attitude F—er” and Motorhead’s “Nightmare (Dreamtime)”. There’s also a hidden track, coming after two minutes of silence at the end of the last track. It was remixed by Bangkok’s very own Futon.
“Follywood” is available in Bangkok at DJ Siam and Do Re Me, both in Siam Square. Check Weekend for an interview with the band in May.

Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz rocks...

I was at Bar None last night to catch the Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz do their maiden gig. The show also featured the Observatory and Stoned Revivals.

Was there around 8-odd as the show was scheduled to start at 8. Thinking I might have missed part of the earlier group, I rushed down and found that the first band will only start at 9. I guess typical of almost every Singaporean event (excluding Army activities), the show started late. Almost half an hour. Was fortunate to grab a seat, a beer and struck up some conversation with this freelance writer. [ Note to self - need to remember people’s names after 3 minutes ]

Anyway, 9+ crowd was getting bigger and host of big names start to arrive. Can see some local celebs among the crowd. Saw Madeline Tan, still looking very good.

First set was by The Observatory, fronted by ex-Humpback Oak mainman Leslie Low. Their music was nice. But I thought was alittle draggy. According to a program summary in Baybeats, “the band relies on vocal storytelling and intelligent wordplay as their main arsenal, while the music provides the soothing soundtrack to the issues being sung about and discussed.”

I’m a music person, not so much into the lyrics, so I need to be able to be swayed or rocked by the music before I’d pay more attention. It didn’t help when most of the words were mumbled throughout and the surrounding didn’t do much either. Was surprised that they didn’t have a drummer playing, in a way I felt it restricted how their music flow. Oh, yah, they had a Mac PowerBook I guess running the drums and other effects. Anyway, they faded off after I guess 45mins.

After yesterday’s Life article about this show, the group most people came to watch appeared after another long wait. The group’s iconic leader X’Ho appeared with ex-DJ Suzanne Walker, now called Sue-Sue Law and Yeow, from X’Ho’s previous group. Their songs came out loud and fast with X’Ho and SSL doing much of the talking/yelling/screaming. I guess SSL being an ex-DJ, does better talking/yelling/screaming than singing. I’m not a good reviewer, so pardon my comparisons but listening to them reminded me of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs cept ZGPS’s music more electro than rock. But I’d recommend their album when it is launched! Must support local music siah!

The last group that appeared was Stoned Revivals. The group that was handpicked to open No Doubt’s concert in Singapore many many moons back closed the show. They performed their unique ?jazz-surf-boogie rock music? music which was a joy to watch for me. Being veterans in local music, those guys were really enjoying their time on stage.

After almost 3 hours plus, 2 beers and plenty of second-hand smoke, the show’s over. The next Monday Sessions Live, unfortunately will be the last for now. The next show will feature 3 other local groups, Pug Jelly, Electrico and Tiramisu. Should be there again to take in good local live music, good beer and bad bad second-hand smoke.

Turning the spotlight on you

GIVEN their attention-seeking reputation, it was a surprise when members of Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz announced they would turn the spotlight on others instead.

Those who attend the launch of their debut album Follywood at Zouk tomorrow at 10pm will walk down a red carpet, and the 'best walker' will win a trip to Bangkok.

Group leader X'Ho claimed he doesn't know what makes a good walker.

'We'll leave that decision to the few judges we've planted in the crowd.'

The group consists of X'Ho, Yeow and radio DJ Suzanne Walker, who created a stir at Febuary's MTV Asia Awards when she lifted her top on the red carpet.

But even if the crowd outside Zouk is not sporting, X'Ho is confident they'll find someone.

'Even if you walk sedated, you might be deemed the best.

Bad review...

Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz. Fronted by Chris Ho. Crap. Had this moron tt was shouting "show us ur tits, chris!". Moron. Suzanne Walker (stage name Susu Low) dressed like trash (lacy bra showing, dress(???) covered till under the bra, big hair, over-makeup), sounding like trash (whiny screaming, faux husky/horny voice). LuRgEE said tt it's 80s music. I dunno manz. Sounded more like boy-band gone wrong. Or maybe it was jus the poser-crowd tt put me in a crap mood. Or maybe it was the fact tt only the Straits Times photog was allowed to take pics of Chris Ho's band. Not tt I was doing any snapping, but LuRgEE & Paul were wanting to take pics. So...you've been ard for awhile, performed more times than most other local acts, got a yuppie-following, and so it gives you the right to be divas issit? yuck. crap.

Again, saving grace was Douglas O. Blood pressure came down slightly.

The gross-iest thing I've seen so far this year...

Was at Zouk with Jason Ong aka J.O. after supporting my friends at their gig at Swing. I went to catch Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz. Well, the set wasn't as good as what they did at BarNone about 3 months ago.

But it was still pretty entertaining, though not as what I had seen before. The energy level wasn't really there. I felt the band was pretty restricted by the volume. It wasn't the usual Zouk blaring volume but somewhat softer. Didn't really go with the electroklash they were churning out. Actually, they sounded like they were miming to tapes and that. Though most of their songs are programmed, they opt to remove the rock feel and sound from their previous gig. In the end, the songs suffered, sounding too sterlized and stiff.

Suzanne Walker came out in a bikini top and almost nothing else, gyrating like a nymphomaniac and gettin' jiggy with her tummy. No, that wasn't the gross-iest thing I had seen. In fact, it was pretty cool she did that, great frontwoman.

You gotta love X' Ho's balls. Here's the Zircon Gov. Pawn Starz' debut album, 'Follywood'. They are playing at Zouk on 24th April, 10 pm. I wanna watch them man. Saw them once at Barnone. They were nonetheless highly entertaining and bitchy.

It's monday morning, yawn, need to recharge. The ZOUK experence was fun. Still got scolding from the Zouk bouncer for taking out a jug of water. They are so kiasu here. X, the star is of course me, the X is you. Don't you have enough groupies already...

Well done guys, now got to check out record sales. Someone said they wanted to buy an album but couldn't get it at the front door. Now back to the grunge of daily life in the studio upgrading software. Boring!!!Building my Pop Career.

Thank you one and all who came down, walked across the red carpet, flashed their tits, acted silly, gazed in awe at Sue-Sue Law's costume and shocked by X'Ho's megaphonic vocals. Lomographed and digtally flashed themselves.
It was a fun night had by all. The sound system cracked, the music played super-loud,explatives and swearing were then norm on stage. Thank you all for being there, and taking us seriously...

Just finished a song for our live set - it's a remake and it's a great Gov.-advocate 'campaign'-song. Secret plainclothes OB-detectives will not be disappointed. Promise.
